IGWC Protests Visa Revocations, Secures Student Status for those
Impacted
Today, over 300 graduate workers, faculty, staff, and community
members showed up in solidarity with those impacted by
the recent revocation of visas at IU. At the protest, grad workers demanded that IU honor its
commitment to its international students and ensure their
continued enrollment and a pathway to their degree regardless of
their visa status.
Meanwhile, several IGWC members worked with the Graduate and
Professional Student Government (GPSG) to coordinate a meeting
between GPSG, several IGWC members, and IU administrators. In this
meeting, IU administrators agreed to help ensure student status
and a flexible pathway to degree for those unjustly impacted by
the actions of the Department of Homeland Security both now and in
the coming months, as well as agreeing to future meetings.
While the ICE emergency plan remains in place in case of ICE
activity on campus, this agreement helps secure the situation for
international students and avoid a possible strike-action.
These negotiations were only possible because of the strong
solidarity grad workers showed at the protest.
A better IU is possible when we pull together and take
collective action.
Solidarity forever.
